Casa Barbara Location

I love Cartagena’s Old Walled City, but I also love a modern building by the beach with a pool — being so close to the Old Walled City, this is the best of both worlds. The building is located in the Cabrero neighborhood which is quiet & residential. The historic Rafael Nuñez House and Apollo Park with chapel are a short walk away (on the way to the Old City).

The beach is across the street and it’s popular among locals, especially on the weekends. You’ll often see fisherman there also, hauling in nets filled with their catch, as well as people waiting to buy fresh fish to cook up for lunch!

There is a 24 hour pharmacy/mini-mart (Droguería Inglesa) on the building’s ground floor, another mini-mart/fast food place around the corner, a larger grocery store about a 5 minute walk away, and a handful of other small restaurants/grocery stores nearby in addition to ambulant vendors selling fruit, vegetables, fish & more!

The apartment is a 5-10 minute/COP$13,000 (~US$4) taxi ride from the airport, a less than 5 minute/COP$7,300 (~US$2.50) taxi ride in to the Old City, a 5-10 minute/COP$9,000 (~US$3) taxi ride away from other sites/areas, such as San Felipe Castle (the huge old Spanish fort) or the tourist dock (for the boats to the Rosario Islands, where many prefer to go for the beach). Taxis are readily available.

Walking during the day is also a great option (it’s about 10 minutes to the Old City), but I advise bringing a hat and an umbrella to ward off the equatorial sun! Taxis are a good option at night.
