Both the Balcones & Moneda Apartments are located in the San Diego section of the old city of Cartagena, within the 500 year old Spanish colonial walls. Colonial architecture abounds!
The Moneda Apartments are located at Calle de la Moneda 7-32, with Balcones nearly across the street on the corner of Calles de la Moneda & Segunda de Badillo.
In Colombia, streets officially have numbers as names. However, the Old City of Cartagena has retained the traditional names of the streets, and the name of the street changes each block. “Moneda” means “coin” or “mint”; a royal mint was built on this block which gave the street its name. “Badillo” is a family name, and there was a Spanish conquistador in Colombia named Pedro de Badillo — is there a connection with the street name? Perhaps!
Online map services use the official names of the street. Calle de la Moneda is officially Calle 36, so the official Moneda Apartment address is Calle 36 7-32. Calle Segunda de Vadillo is officially Carrera 7; the official Balcones address is Carrera 7 36-12. You can see our locations and the outline of the remaining Old City walls on an interactive Google map by clicking here.
Both Calle de la Moneda & Calle Segunda de Badillo are busy and lively during the day, but quiet at night. There are shops and small restaurants on these streets while just at the other end of Calle Segunda de Badillo is the beautiful Parque Fernandez de Madrid, with cafes with outdoor seating, restaurants, a chocolate museum, and more.
At the far end of the Calle de la Moneda block is an Exito department store which sells everything from groceries to electronics; it also has an ATM machine and internet service. Just one block the other way is the main University of Cartagena building as well as the popular Juan Valdez coffee shop.
Calle de la Moneda is widely used by Cartageneros as they go to and from work, school, etc. (and to shop!). You are in the heart of “real” Cartagena when you stay with us!
Churches, museums, other shops, the old city wall, and the Caribbean Sea are only a few blocks away.
Getting around: Walking is the best way to get around the Walled City – it’s great wandering the maze of quaint streets. But you are never far from the surrounding walls so you don’t have to worry about accidentally straying too far!
If you are in a hurry or want to venture outside the walls, taxis are inexpensive and easily flagged on the street. We are a 5-10 minute/US$2-3 taxi ride away from major points of interest such as San Felipe Castle (the huge old Spanish fort) or the tourist dock (for the boats to the Rosario Islands, where many prefer to go for the beach), or the beaches of Bocagrande, Laguito and Castillogrande.
The Balcones & Moneda Apartments are just a 5-10 minute/~US$4 taxi ride from the airport.
